TIFF vs JPEG Film Scans: Are TIFF Scans Worth Paying For?
I got TIFF scans back from my lab for the first time last roll. It cost me $30 extra, the files were enormous, and I've spent a while since then figuring out whether I'd pay for them again. The short version is that they're worth it in one specific situation and a waste of money in most others. Here's what a TIFF actually gets you over a JPEG, what I noticed editing them, and the question you should ask your lab before you pay for the upgrade.
What the difference actually is
Two things separate them.
Compression. JPEG is lossy. It throws away data to make the file smaller, and every time you re-save one you lose a little more. TIFF is either uncompressed or losslessly compressed, so re-saving it costs you nothing. One careful round trip through a high quality JPEG is usually invisible. It's doing it over and over that degrades the image.
Bit depth. This is the one that matters, and it's the part most people skip. A JPEG as everyone actually uses it holds 8 bits per channel, which is 256 levels of each color. A TIFF can hold 16 bits per channel, which is 65,536 levels. That's the difference in how much you can push a file before it falls apart. When you lift shadows or shift color hard on an 8-bit file and the sky goes to visible bands instead of a smooth gradient, that's you running out of levels.
What a TIFF does not give you is more resolution. A 4492 by 6774 scan is a 4492 by 6774 scan in either format. Indie Film Lab says this outright on their FAQ: TIFF files are not higher resolution, they're less compressed.
Ask your lab if their TIFFs are 16-bit
This is the thing I'd want to know before spending money, and most labs don't publish it.
The editing headroom I described above comes from bit depth. If your lab hands you an 8-bit TIFF, you're paying extra for a file that has exactly the same 256 levels per channel as the JPEG sitting next to it. The only thing you've bought is freedom from generational loss.
And 8-bit lab TIFFs are real. Carmencita publishes bit depth per scanner, and their Fuji Frontier SP3000 outputs 8 bits while their Noritsu HS-1800 outputs 16. Legacy Photo Lab sells 8-bit and 16-bit TIFFs as two different products at the same resolution, 87 MB versus 180 MB per frame. Most labs say nothing at all.
The ones I found that do state it: theFINDlab offers 16-bit TIFFs on their Noritsu for $10 a roll, and here in Portland, Blue Moon Camera says plainly that their TIFF scans are 16-bit.
So ask. If the answer is 8-bit, save your money.
What I actually noticed
The real difference for me was flexibility in post. I could push the files further, and corrections held together in a way they don't on a JPEG. That part is not subtle once you're actually working on an image.
What I could not tell was whether there was more detail in them. Something looked different to me, but I have no way to separate the format from the film, the scanner, or the frame itself. So I'm not going to claim it. Detail comes from the scan resolution and from the grain in the negative, and neither of those changes when the file gets saved as a TIFF.
For what it's worth, the labs themselves say the same thing. Richard Photo Lab tells customers their high resolution JPEGs provide the same visual quality as the TIFFs at a smaller file size. Carmencita says the color rendering between their JPGs and TIFFs is very similar, and that 99% of the work you see out of their lab is scanned as JPG.
The file sizes are not a small problem
At a full resolution 35mm scan, roughly 30 megapixels, a 16-bit TIFF runs about 180 MB per frame. That's around 6.5 GB for a roll of 36. The same roll as high quality JPEGs at the same resolution is about 700 MB.
So you're looking at roughly ten times the storage, and that's per roll, forever, plus backups. It adds up faster than you'd think, and it's the reason I wouldn't order them by default.
What it should cost
I paid $30 a roll. Having now looked at what other labs charge for the same upgrade, that is high.
Published TIFF surcharges for 35mm sit between about $1 and $10 a roll, and most of them cluster in the $2 to $5 range. Citizens Photo here in Portland charges a dollar. Memphis Film Lab is about two. Blue Moon is four. Boutique Film Lab is five. theFINDlab is ten, and theirs is confirmed 16-bit.
If you're being charged $30, either it's bundling a resolution upgrade on top of the format change, or you're paying well over the going rate. I'm looking into which one it was on mine.
The print thing, which is not what I expected
My assumption going in was that TIFFs were the format you'd want for making prints. That turns out to be mostly backwards at the output stage.
Every print pipeline I actually use ends in a JPEG. Etsy takes jpg, gif, png, svg, and heic. Printify and Printful take JPEG, PNG, and SVG. Gelato takes PDF, PNG, JPG, and HEIC. Not one of them accepts a TIFF upload. And Bay Photo, a professional print lab, states in their file prep guidelines that they want 8 bits per channel only, that JPEG is preferred, and that 16 or 32 bit files will become corrupted going into their system.
So the value of a TIFF is in the editing you do before you flatten and export, not in the file that goes to the printer. If you're going to work an image hard, having 16 bits to work with while you do it means the 8-bit JPEG you export at the end is a cleaner file. If you're not editing much, you gained nothing.
Whether 16-bit meaningfully improves a finished print over a well-prepared 8-bit file is genuinely argued about and I couldn't find a solid source settling it. What I can tell you is that the industry prints 8-bit.
A lab TIFF still isn't a RAW file
This is worth understanding before you assume a TIFF gives you full control.
When a lab scans your negative, an operator is making color and density decisions during the scan and inversion, and those decisions are baked into whatever file you get. A TIFF preserves those choices at higher quality. It doesn't undo them. That's a real difference from a digital RAW file, where the color decisions are still yours to make.
Some labs offer uncorrected or auto or straight scans, which skip the frame-by-frame adjustments. Those still run through the scanner's automatic inversion, so they aren't raw either. If you want actual raw control over a negative you're looking at scanning it yourself with a digital camera and inverting it in something like Negative Lab Pro, which specifically wants a RAW file and warns against feeding it TIFFs or JPEGs.
So are they worth it
Here's where I landed.
Worth it if you're going somewhere and you expect to come back with photos you want to print. That's the case where the extra editing room actually gets used, and where the cost is small next to what the trip cost you. If I go on another big trip, I'll pay for TIFFs on the rolls that matter.
Not worth it if the photos are going to Instagram. Social media compresses everything you upload anyway, the file sizes are a real burden, and you will not see the difference. If your output is a screen, high resolution JPEGs are fine and I don't think that's a compromise.
The money is the deciding factor for most people, and I'd rather spend it on more film than on bigger files of the same photos. Order TIFFs on the roll you know is good. Order JPEGs on the rest.
